A few years ago, the car industry made a shift, and did away
with the midsize truck. Customers showed their displeasure, and slowly the
midsize truck has started to make a comeback. And Hyundai has decided that they
want in on the midsize truck market and coming in 2018, they will release the
All-New 2019 Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Originally debuting at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the Santa
Cruz was released to great applause and fanfare, and fans a anxiously awaiting
its arrival. According to Dave Zuchowski , President and CEO of Hyundai Motor
America, “The Santa Cruz is a lifestyle
pickup, which will share a platform with the Tuscon compact crossover. It went
in for design review in early August, and is close to locking in the final design.”
In the mid-2000’s, many automakers moved away from the
midsized truck and discontinued many models. The Subaru Baja was discontinued,
the Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline all soon
followed. But already Chevy, GMC and Honda
have reintroduced their mid-size trucks with Ford and Jeep expected to follow.
But first the Hyundai Santa Cruz!
Hyundai plans on the pricing for the Santa Cruz to start
around $25,000. And hope to sell about 50,000 Santa Cruz pickups a year, but
think that number could be as high as 70,000 a year. The Santa Cruz with most likely be produced
in Montgomery, Alabama with the Santa Fe Sport.
Hyundai is looking to capitalize on the fact that 62 percent of total
industry sales are trucks and SUVs, but only
account for 25 percent of Hyundai’s sales.
