The All-New Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid



40 miles per gallon combined, city and highway.  Let's start there.  Hyundai's first-ever plug-in hybrid obviously gets outstanding gas mileage.  Next, how about a 27 mile all-electric range?  Now, put those numbers together with a comfortable, roomy sedan, full of amenities and the latest in safety technology, and you have the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid.

As part of Hyundai's move towards alternative-fuel vehicles, the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Sonata is a huge step for the company.  From all appearances, they seem to have knocked the first pitch out of the park.  So much so that this Sonata has won a coveted Ward's 10 Best Engines award.  This is an incredible accomplishment considering this is the first year of the vehicles existence.  

According to Hyundai, "Its high-capacity battery system offers the option to plug into a regular household electrical outlet for an additional power source.  You can charge on the go by switching to hybrid mode during highway cruising." Recharging times range from less than nine hours with the standard equipped 120V charger to under three hours with a 240V charger.

The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid may be the first car of its kind for Hyundai, but it definitely won't be the last.  Due out later this year will be the Ioniq, which will utilize the same technology, and will be offered with three different drive trains.
